Abner Germanow, director of enterprise networking at IDC, has itemized the five major factors that influence Internet networking. They include: voice and video, the rise of network-based businesses beyond Amazon, Google and e-Bay, the success of intelligence networks, the explosion of network touch points and finally, virtualization.
Voice and video are placing more and more demands on IT infrastructures and options have come a long way from just You Tube. IP surveillance and video training are hot topics around conferencing and other tele-presence situations. Intelligent networks are key enterprise requirements with all the users and applications flooding the network. End point growth enables more items to connect to the network, sparking more and more network expansion. Virtualization drives networking growth by forcing new applications where the importance of each port connection is greatly increased.
Performance and not technology is the key to gaining customer confidence in the conversion, storage, protection, processing, transmission and retrieval of information. In the words of Germanow:
“The way that companies succeed is the applications that they use to reach their customers. While the market is shifting from speeds and feeds to features and functions, performance is still critical. It has to be there.”
Despite the fact that Internet networking is a mature market, it is growing fast.
