By democratic standards, life in China can only seem more restricted and regulated whether one is referring to a government imposed birth rate or freedom of expression. According to a recent Associated Press article, web site owners in China have been required to register with the government since 2005, but new rules backed by a Chinese based Internet group are now tightening even more the state’s hold on individual expression.
Bloggers will soon have to present real names and identification cards. Anonymous posting within China will be impossible in a society where all media is state-controlled. For a nation that has the world’s second-largest population of Internet users after the United States with an estimated 137 million people online and 20 million blogs, this new code of conduct seems ludicrous and overly restrictive.
